Fly Fishing Gear for Dry Flies

Poetry in motion for fly fishers is watching a trout rise to a dry fly. This visual aspect of fly fishing is a style many prefer, especially apparent by the number of anglers that chase epic bug emergences like blanket caddisfly hatches on Montana’s Missouri River, the Hex mayfly in Michigan, and Penn Creek’s Green Drake hatch in central Pennsylvania. The simple approach is to show up and fish, yet the following pieces of gear will increase the number of fish you catch, plus make for a more enjoyable experience.

Josh Miller’s New Book!!

Congratulations to my friend, Josh Miller! His new book on Euro nymphing is a winner, and he even hand-delivered a copy to me, better than Amazon Prime 😂 Anytime our families get together for dinner, it’s always a fun night, and we only bore Heather and Sarah with just a tiny amount of fly fishing talk 😅 Better for you, Josh was able to secure some copies before the official release date, get them here:

Resources for: READING THE WATER!

Being able to read the water is a skill that separates anglers, allowing some to almost “peek” underneath the surface. Reading seams, determining approximate depths, and even knowing where the fish may lie gives you an advantage on the water. This comes with experience on the water, watching how your flies are drifting and getting positive feedback when casting to different water types.

Increase your knowledge base by talking and fishing with others, plus use these resources to guide your fly fishing journey:

Reading Streams

Reading Trout Water

Stillwater Fly Fishing

Diverse Water Types

Fly Tying

Trout and Their Food

Dave Whitlock is a legend, he recently passed yet lives on with resources he left us. This is the kind of book that you can read quickly. You’ll read it once and say, “I can’t believe that Tim recommended such a short book.”

Then you’ll read it again and say, “This is EVERYTHING trout eat.” And that will transform your fly fishing. It did for me.

Observation: The Angler’s Science

“On my return I found the party at camp; they had butchered the buffalo and brought in some more meat as I had directed. Goodrich had caught half a dozen very fine trout and a number of both species of the white fish. These trout are from sixteen to twenty three inches in length, precisely resemble our mountain or speckled trout in form and the position of their fins, but the specks on these are of a deep black instead of the red or gold color of those common to the U.' States. These are furnished long sharp teeth on the pallet and tongue and have generally a small dash of red on each side behind the front ventral fins; the flesh is of a pale yellowish red, or when in good order, of a rose red.” Meriwether Lewis, 13 June, 1805

While other explorers and generations of native peoples had encountered cutthroat trout, Lewis and Clark’s notes from their expedition were profound enough that later taxonomists would give them the name Salmo clarkii. In the excerpt from their journals above, pertinent to anglers is Lewis’ contrast of these new trout to “those common to the U.’ States.” Even a cursory observation demonstrated that cutthroats differed from the well-known brook trout.
